Tale of the Tape: Arizona State University vs. Grand Canyon University

Today, colleges offer a wide range of programs and a diverse learning experience.  Students have the choice between for profit and traditional college.  Many may wonder if there really is a difference between the two choices.  Both for profit and traditional universities have their pros and cons.  The type of student and their needs and style will determine what type of college is the best fit.  When discussing the difference between for profit and traditional colleges, an interesting comparison is Arizona State University (a traditional college) and Grand Canyon University (a for profit college).  Arizona State University admits 89% of applicants while Grand Canyon admits 37% of applicants.  Both universities boast large enrollment numbers with Arizona State University enrollment at 72,254 (58,404 undergraduates) and Grand Canyon University enrollment at 40,487 (24,886 undergraduates).  While both universities have large enrollment, their ratio of male and female students are slightly different.  Arizona State University has an enrollment of 50% male and 50% female students while Grand Canyon University has 33% male students and 67% female students.  If student to faculty ratio is of interest to you, Arizona State University has a 24 student to 1 faculty member ratio and Grand Canyon University has a 22 student to 1 faculty member ratio.  Also, 89% of new students at Arizona State University  receive financial aid and at Grand Canyon University, 74% of new students receive financial aid.  Students may also wonder what the difference in tuition is between a for profit and traditional university.  At Arizona State University, in-state students will pay $23,001 to attend and out-of-state students will pay $36,224 (both include tuition and fees, books, room and board, and other expenses).  At Grand Canyon University all students will pay $29,500 (includes tuition and fees, books, room and board, and other expenses)  to attend.  Whether students want to be an Arizona State University Sun Devil or a Grand Canyon University Antelope, they will have two good choices between traditional and for profit universities.

I find this quite ironic, I was actually deciding on attending GCU, but then I saw this post and it made me rethink my choices. It got me thinking that I have a better chance in getting admitted into ASU rather than GCU. Then I also concidered the fact that GCU is more of a formal and strict college than ASU. I haven’t been able to make up my mind yet, but these statistics are sure helping me out alot!
